EDUC 605: Unit 1: Identifying Problems of Practice and Selecting Evidence

Purpose and Outcomes: Unit 1 | Identifying Problems of Practice and Selecting Evidence. Purpose: The purpose of this unit is to identify problems of practice and to select evidence to support that problem. We will examine the common steps involved in most problem-solving frameworks, examine differences in various frameworks, and discuss the importance of using evidence in problem solving. We will review the structure and organization of the Problem Statement papers required for this course. We will examine how to interpret the different types of evidence and research that you will include in your written work in this program. As part of interpreting sources, we will focus on both summary of the source (i.e., what does the author say?) and analysis of the content (i.e., what does the author mean?). We will examine and discuss such issues as purpose and intent, as well discuss how to present the author's ideas in your own writing without changing the original ideas or meaning. Understanding and knowing what an author says and means is an important skill required before you can effectively present the work of others in your own writing. We will examine the importance of evidence in academic and professional practice. We will particularly examine how to access and evaluate the different types of evidence and research that you will include in your written work. We will examine the different types of evidence available for framing and solving problems. As you begin researching and searching for information for your Problem Statement papers, you will discover many types of evidence. However, not all evidence has the same validity or reliability. Therefore, we will look at the different types of evidence to determine which is more convincing when presenting information to support your assertions. As part of this unit, you will also write an introductory paragraph of one of your Problem Statement papers. The class will be conducted in a workshop format, with time for you to review worked examples, as well as time to search for evidence to include in your Problem Statement paragraph. You will also engage in peer review with a classmate and incorporate suggestions and feedback from your peer and your instructor. We will continue to apply strategies for effectively interpreting and presenting evidence in academic writing. You will learn the different ways you can effectively present the ideas and words of others in your own work to avoid plagiarizing and how to take numerous sources of information and synthesize them to support a common statement or assertion. Outcomes: At the end of this unit you will be able to: Identify at least two potential problems of practice in your field or organization. Articulate the common steps and challenges in problem solving. Identify and explain the components of the Problem Statement paper.Identify at least two relevant problems of practice in your field.Interpret evidenced-based resources to determine author's purpose, intentions, and meaning.Distinguish the differences between paraphrasing, summary, and synthesis.Apply strategies for interpreting evidence-based resources to determine author's purpose, intentions, and meaning.Paraphrase, summarize, and synthesize sources of evidence. Summary below.Tip: If you plan to display a lot of videos, consider creating several video gallery pages, organized by topic or theme.
